A Not-so-Civil War

A telling insight into the gulf between the lives of these children and that of the Bazelons came when the toddler spotted two police cars along the side of the road with their lights blazing. "Look, guys! Police cars!" A pause. "Everyone hit the floor!"

In my experience, there are indeed two Americas. From what I've observed, the "other America" doesn't vote, fears rather than respects the law, and fights like mad just to get by in this world. So far as I can tell, political America largely ignores them, resents them, and prefers to rally behind the banner of Bush's self-interested slogan: "It's your money."

While I agree with drdorin that the Edwards are performing an admirable service by injecting this issue into the 2008 campaign, Daniel Gross' piece on law-firm charity most sharply spot-lighted this issue last week.

An empire from a tub of goo

These corporations are not Socially Responsible and it will be those in Alberta that will pay the ultimate price. Money is not the end it to be all. Do not cry when there is no more water, your children are dying and mother nature is destroy forever. Posted 26/01/08 at 1:47 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

The United States and the Environment: Laggard or Leader?

If there is one country that bears the most responsibility for the lack of progress on international environmental issues, it is the United States.
--Gus Speth, Red Sky at Dawn[1]

Sadly, our nation is also at present the biggest engine of ecological destruction on Earth, the chief (but by no means only) force keeping humanity on collision course with the natural world.
--Paul and Anne Ehrlich, One with Nineveh[2]

U.S. Given Poor Marks on the Environment
--New York Times headline, January 23, 2008

To borrow the blunt language of Generation X and the "Millennials," does the United States suck when it comes to the environment? Contrary to the perception expressed in the epigraphs above, the answer turns out to be a resounding No; the United States remains the world's environmental leader and is likely to continue as such.

Dudes with attitude problems

If this was the same bus that resort to the misdemeanors as described above, it certainly had one hell of an attitude problem. But if it happens to be one of many practising these things as if it was second nature, we have a hell of an attitude problem.
A letter from Kumbaeyer in New Ireland province yesterday showed perhaps another facet of this problem: "Recently, while I was in Mt Hagen, I got the shock of my life when I decided to take a stroll from the Highlander Hotel to the main town centre. Using the route from the coffee market lawn heading towards the Family Centre church and court house, I noticed some cars parked on the lawn. But on closer inspection, I noticed used oil, filters and other used vehicle servicing components were scattered on the lawn. I then realised that these people were servicing their vehicles on the lawn.
