Kidd is officially a Maverick again

It became apparent Monday night that the trade would go through after serious doubt crept in numerous times throughout the saga. Harris is already in New Jersey for his physical.

Joining him in the trade are backup center DeSagana Diop, reserve swingman Trenton Hassell, little-used second-year guard Maurice Ager and the linchpin of the deal, the semi-retired Keith Van Horn, who will pocket $4 million to get the salaries to match.

The Mavs also throw in $3 million and first-round draft picks in 2008 and 2010. To first sign Van Horn before they could trade him, the Mavs had to waive rookie Nick Fazekas on Tuesday.

Along with Kidd, the Mavs receive 6-foot-10 forward Malik Allen, who is not a typical banger, gathering just 2.7 rebounds and 5.4 points in 15.9 minutes a game, plus Antoine Wright, a third-year guard who has been slow to develop as a pro since leaving Texas A&M after his junior season.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander LS 4WD Review

Does Mitsubishi have an identity crisis? When its name is mentioned, some people think of SUVs, like the Montero, while others think of the Lancer Evolution high-performance rally replica.

If so, the company is working hard to blend the best of both sides of its reputation. With its second-generation 2007 Outlander, Mitsubishi has merged an SUV with a rally car. A wild claim? You'd be forgiven for thinking so, as performance and handling are not usually associated with a crossover SUV. But the new Outlander, which shares little besides the name with the original, previews the chassis platform that will underly the next-generation Lancer Evo, and its four-wheel drive system is meant more for traction and cornering on pavement than traditional four-wheeling. In the crowded and competitive mid-size, middle-class crossover field, the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander stands out by virtue of its sporty abilities.

Board approves service plan for HVAC system

The Forrest City School Board on Monday agreed to enter into a contract with a local company to try and ensure that the new HVAC system at the high school works properly.

Following some discussion on the matter, the districts board agreed unanimously to a one-year maintenance contract with Store Services Inc., of Forrest City for a base price of $6,480. The contract requires SSI to perform quarterly maintenance on the system. Board member Ernestine Weaver was absent. The other bidder was Mohr Heating and Air Conditioning of Wynne.

Architect Dave Hodges, who works with the school district on the HVAC system, explained to the board that a separate maintenance contract, in his opinion, would benefit the district.

Basically, you would hire someone to get really familiar with the system and to check quarterly to make sure everything is working properly, said Hodges.

Accused bunker shooter's friend says teen often talked 'crazy'

A teen who pleaded not guilty Tuesday to executing a young couple at an abandoned military bunker often talked of "crazy, crazy" things but wasn't taken seriously, one of his closest friends said Tuesday.

"It's innocent until proven guilty," Rob Misetic, 18, said of Collin Lee McGlaughlin, whom he has known since 2003, when they were underclassmen at a private La Verne high school. "But if he did it, (he) finally snapped."

McGlaughlin, 18, of West Covina, was arraigned on murder charges in San Bernardino County Superior Court in Barstow along with David Brian Smith, 19, of Covina.

New Altima coupe looks like a winner

For years, Toyota and Honda have offered alternatives for those seeking a car as well-designed and well-built as a Camry or Accord sedan but with more sportiness and more expressive styling: the Camry and Accord coupes.

This summer Nissan followed suit; for buyers who like Nissans and like the Altima sedan but want something that looks less common -- sportier -- than a sedan, there's now an Altima coupe.

Leaving aside the inherent impracticalities of a coupe's long doors and cramped rear seat, the Altima looks like a winner.

Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"

The Otis and I are celebrating our 7th anniversary (and my 28th birthday) with our 2nd annual Karaoke Idol competition. Last year's was a blast. And I was truly honored that I wasn't one of the Bottom Three. (Though I thought I was deserving). My song is "Fancy." I've Athol-fied the lyrics, which should help me get in the judges good graces. Because I can tell you right now that my vocal stylings definitely won't help me win that shiny 1st place trophy. (Yes, folks, we are doing trophies this year). And I'm thinking of dressing the part. Maybe some Wranglers and a Stetson? -- Mommy Dearest/BrodH20.

Mommy Dearest's Quandry: We have an awesome panel of judges: The Paula-licious Leenda the Ball, Megs Cowell and newbie Orange TV. Based on last year's judging, I haven't decided whether it's better to perform early when the judges are still stone-cold sober, or if it's better to wait until they've got that warm and fuzzy feeling in their veins.
