| Electric cars face battery of hurdles
In the rush to deliver an electric car to the masses, General Motors Corp. is finding that the all-important battery might not be the only major hurdle. The heating and cooling systems, for example, are a challenge because they typically are built to run off a traditional fuel combustion engine. That means new types of air conditioning and heating systems must be built. GM, in a high-stakes race with Toyota Motor Corp. to turn out an affordable, effective battery-powered car, has found that while the lithium-ion batteries themselves are hitting all the marks on early road tests, a host of other issues are beginning to crop up. .
Settings, speakers could improve DVDs' sound
Q: The sound on rented VCR tapes and DVDs is usually so poor, I can barely hear the dialogue, even with my TV sound turned up to the maximum. Sometimes it is impossible to hear across the room, even when the air conditioner is off. Sometimes the background music overpowers the dialogue. This happens with rented DVDs and videos, but never with programs I tape from broadcasts via basic cable (no converter box). Broadcast sound is always adequate. What might cause this? Is this because of the size of my TV (13 inches)? Would a larger TV solve the problem? How can I improve the movie sound without spending big bucks?--Alice Bratter A: Hi-fi videotapes and DVDs are recorded at sound levels meant for the home theater experience. This means they have wide dynamic range, meaning soft sounds are soft and loud sounds can get very loud.
The last Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is under construction in ...
Bush looks more like the base of a large building than the bottom of a sleek warship. It’s a sight not many people see — not even most of the thousands of workers who have labored on the ship during the past six years in advance of the Oct. 7 christening. Based on unprecedented access to the shipyard for the past six months, this special section takes the rest of us under, over, inside and out, to tell the story of the 10th and last Nimitz-class carrier — and some of the workers building it. .

The Michael
My sister was playing Dr. Mario on the gameboy and I was playing with a laser pointer. I had forgotten how much fun it was to play with the laser pointer, because I played with it for quite a while. Things I did with the laser pointer: I spun around in the computer chair with the laser in hand making squiggles on the wall. Lifted the window shade to see how far I could shine the laser outside. Shined the laser on the gravel at the bottom of the fish aquarium. The fish actually tried to eat the red dot! Made cool laser light shows by shining the laser on different shiny surfaces. If you need something to do tonight find a laser pointer. .
