| Ontario hands $3.6M to Eastern Ontario hospitals
The Ontario government is giving hospitals in Eastern Ontario $3.6 million for building improvements. The money is part of $36 million the government is handing out to hospitals across the province to replace roofs and windows, upgrade heating, air conditioning, repalce back-up generators and improve other things like fire alarms. Of the six hospitals in Ottawa, five will share $1.6 million for various upgrades and improvements. The Royal Ottawa Healthcare Group, which includes the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, gets no money because its maintenance and upgrades are funded through a different program. The Ottawa Hospital, which is the largest in the region, will get $764,445 and hospital president Dr. Jack Kitts said the money will help "strengthen our infrastructure" and improve patient care.
Animals Impounded, Building Nears Capacity
Norman, Okla. -- Officials in Norman impounded more than 30 dogs and cats this weekend. The animals are now at the Norman Animal Welfare Shelter, but overcrowding at the facility just became an even bigger issue. KSBI-TV's Kealey McIntire has more. Nearly 175 dogs and cats a week are taken to the Norman Animal Welfare Shelter. This weekend 23 cats and nine dogs were impounded and were taken to the shelter in addition to the normal activity. Major Jim Maisano, a Norman police officer, works closely with the animal welfare division. He says they're glad to help, but this weekend's activity adds to the overcrowding issue. "So that takes up a lot of our space not counting the average number of dogs and cats we take in during the week," says Maisano.
The Shrink Rap
Upside: Air-conditioning 24/seven and the fact that the job requires absolutely no thinking or effort. Downside: No time to sit down and the fact that the job requires absolutely no thinking or effort. Wages: $6-$10 per hour. Minimum age: 14 (for baggers), 16 (for everyone else). How do I get this job? Start nagging your local supermarkets and drug stores … in March. Hook-up factor: Low. There are two problems: a) Writing your phone number on grocery-store receipts is a bit too cheesy for most to pull off; and b) if you're a bagger, the only people you'd have time to flirt with are the people who are buying lots of groceries, i.e., moms (and dads!) with minivans and toddlers. Job: Busboy, waiter, or hostess at a mid-priced restaurant. They say you learn how to: Interact with people, read a wine list, serve food.
How Vatican reacted to mission's wind of change
IT WAS established as a haven where Polish war veterans could worship and in recent years became a place where young migrants could discuss their worries and share their faith. But now a row has erupted over the future of a Catholic mission which exposes a split between the traditional church back in Poland and the new generation of economic migrants. At its heart is a reformist priest who tried to support the influx of devout young Poles, struggling to balance independence with the values of old Poland, where the church exerts a great deal of influence. Now Father Edward Hodurek has been ordered back to Poland by the Vatican and a hall used by the Polish community in Falkirk has been closed and put up for sale. Members of the congregation have been told to attend masses conducted by 30 traditional priests recently brought over from Poland and whose upkeep is to be paid for by the sale of the United Polish Mission. The migrants, led by Joanna Creslik, the chairwoman of a support group for the town's 2,000 recently arrived Poles, have launched a campaign to prevent the sale.
